Chapter 136 Laboratory Explosion
Chapter 136 Laboratory Explosion
"Yes, it's settled." Su Wanwan nodded with a smile.
Lin Weiwei has gradually gotten the hang of the work in the publicity department.
She completed the task of creating illustrations for the technical project assigned to her by the section chief very diligently.
In the past few days, she has made several trips to the technical room to consult with Bai Si'an and other technicians, transforming those obscure technical terms into simple and intuitive drawings.
Xiao Zhang and Xiao Wang both praised her drawing skills, and even the section chief nodded in approval.
Only Gu Lin remained indifferent, occasionally glancing at her with barely concealed jealousy.
Lin Weiwei ignored her and focused on her own things.
Around 3 p.m., she checked the last illustration she had finished and, after confirming that there were no problems, decided to take it to the technical room for Bai Si'an to take a look at and see if there were any parts that needed to be modified.
The technical room is located at the very back of the camp, requiring you to pass through a training field.
The afternoon sun in the Gobi Desert is extremely strong, making the ground scorching hot.
Lin Weiwei shielded her forehead with her hand and walked quickly.
On the training ground, a group of soldiers were practicing bayonet fighting, their shouts of battle deafening.
Lin Weiwei bypassed the training ground and turned into a quiet path.
There are rows of single-story houses on both sides of the road, which serve as technical offices and warehouses. It's usually quiet with few people around.
She walked to the door of the technical room and knocked.
No one answered from inside.
Lin Weiwei pushed open the door and went inside.
The technical room was quiet; there wasn't a single person there.
Blueprints and parts were spread out on the long table, and several pieces of equipment stood quietly with indicator lights flashing faintly.
"Bai Si'an?" Lin Weiwei called out.
No one answered.
She frowned, turned to leave, and suddenly heard a noise coming from the inner room.
The inner room is where precision instruments and hazardous chemicals are stored. The door is usually locked, and only technicians can enter.
Lin Weiwei walked over and found the door slightly ajar.
She pushed open the door and peeked inside.
The inner room was smaller than the outer room, and against the wall was a row of metal cabinets with labels that read "Flammable", "Explosive" and "Highly Toxic".
On a laboratory table in the middle, there were several instruments that Lin Weiwei couldn't name, as well as several glasswares filled with liquids of different colors.
Bai Si'an was standing in front of the lab table with his back to the door, looking down at something, while Li Jianguo was learning from him.
He was wearing a white lab coat, protective goggles, and gloves, and his movements were focused and careful.
Lin Weiwei remained silent, leaning against the door frame and watching him.
Bai Si'an at work is very different from his usual self.
He adjusted his glasses less often, his brows furrowed slightly, and his lips pressed into a straight line.
His hands were steady as he held the tools, and every movement was precise and efficient.
The sunlight streaming in through the window fell upon him, giving him a fuzzy, golden edge.
As Lin Weiwei watched, the corners of her mouth unconsciously curved upwards.
Her technician is actually quite handsome when he's serious.
Just as he was thinking, Bai Si'an suddenly paused, leaned forward slightly, and approached a device on the lab table.
It was a metal box about half a meter square, with several pipes attached to it, and several glass bottles attached to the other end of the pipes.
There are several dials on the side of the box, and the pointers are trembling slightly.
Bai Si'an stared at the dial, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper.
Li Jianguo then reached out and carefully adjusted one of the knobs.
The knob makes a slight "click" sound when turned.
The pointer on the dial jumped sharply, pointing to the red area.
Bai Si'an's expression changed, and he immediately shouted, "Li Jianguo, let go!"
Li Jianguo quickly released his grip and took a step back.
But it was too late.
A buzzing sound came from inside the metal box, as if something was spinning rapidly inside, and the sound grew increasingly shrill.
The box began to vibrate, the connecting pipes shook violently, and the glass bottles collided with each other, making a crisp sound.
"No good!" Bai Si'an roared and turned to rush out.
But his legs were weak, and he was a beat slower than usual.
Just then, the metal box emitted a piercing pop.
"Bang!!!"
It wasn't a huge explosion, but a muffled, compressed cracking sound.
Immediately afterwards, a crack appeared on the side of the box, and a pungent white smoke billowed out!
White smoke instantly filled half the room, so thick it was almost impenetrable.
Lin Weiwei stood at the door, stunned by this sudden turn of events.
She saw Bai Si'an engulfed in white smoke and heard him cough violently.
"Bai Si'an!" she screamed, rushing inside without thinking.
The white smoke choked her, bringing tears to her eyes and making her throat feel like it had been cut with a knife.
She squinted, desperately searching for Bai Si'an's figure in the thick smoke.
"Get out... Lin Weiwei... Get out..." Bai Si'an's voice came from deep within the thick smoke, intermittent and filled with painful gasps.
Lin Weiwei ignored the warning, covered her mouth and nose, and groped her way toward the direction of the sound.
She kicked something and stumbled, almost falling.
I held onto the lab table and touched a wet, sticky liquid.
I don't know what kind of chemical reagent it is.
She didn't care about anything else and kept moving forward.
Finally, near the metal cabinet close to the corner, she touched Bai Si'an.
He slumped to the ground, leaning against the cabinet, his white coat covered in stains of unknown origin.
My protective goggles were shattered, and I had small scratches on my face that were bleeding.
He clutched his chest with one hand and braced himself on the ground with the other, gasping for breath. With each breath, his brow furrowed in pain.
"Bai Si'an! How are you?" Lin Weiwei knelt beside him, her voice trembling with tears.
"N-nothing...it's nothing..." Bai Si'an said with difficulty, "It's just...inhaling a little smoke...my chest feels tight..."
He looked up at her, his eyes, behind the shattered glasses, were frighteningly red: "What are you doing in here... Get out... This smoke is poisonous..."
"I'm not going out!" Lin Weiwei's tears streamed down her face. "If we're going out, we'll go out together!"
She reached out to help him.
Bai Si'an tried to push her away, but he didn't have the strength.
Lin Weiwei gritted her teeth, grabbed his arm, put it on her shoulder, and pulled him up forcefully.
Bai Si'an was taller and heavier than her, and she struggled to pull him, beads of sweat appearing on her forehead.
"You...you go by yourself..." Bai Si'an was still struggling.
"Stop talking nonsense!" Lin Weiwei yelled at him, her voice trembling from the force. "Hold on tight!"
Bai Si'an stopped moving. He looked at her flushed face, at the tears and determination in her eyes, and a deep tremor ran through him.
He stopped struggling and, cooperating with her strength, slowly stood up.
Lin Weiwei supported him, moving step by step towards the door.
Thick smoke was still billowing out, and visibility was very low. She squinted and walked out based on her memory.
I kicked something again, this time a rolling glass bottle. The bottle shattered, and the liquid inside spilled out, mixing with other liquids on the ground, making a hissing sound and emitting even thicker white smoke.
Lin Weiwei's heart tightened, and she quickened her pace.
