Chapter 44: The Investigation Begins
Chapter 44: The Investigation Begins
Xiaohongshan Meiyu Palace.
As soon as Shen Yi was led into the living room, he saw Song Meiyu sitting at the piano, playing a piece.
It's Mozart's "Minuet," a lively and melodious piece, a typical Classical piano piece, perfect for social occasions.
As soon as the song ended, Shen Yi immediately clapped.
Song Meiyu had sensed Shen Yi's arrival long ago. She turned to look at her student and said with a hint of reproach:
"You haven't come for so long, I thought you'd forgotten about your teacher."
Shen Yi thought to himself, no wonder that old bald man liked Song Meiyu so much. Even though she was almost forty years old, she still had a lot of charm.
"Teacher, please don't be offended. I could never forget you, no matter who else I might forget. I've wanted to visit you for a long time, but I've been too busy with official duties lately to find the time," Shen Yi quickly said.
"After parting ways with the teacher, the student bought something to give to the teacher. The student had been planning to give it to the teacher for a while, but kept putting it off until now."
After saying that, Shen Yi presented the scroll in his hand to Song Meiyu.
When Song Meiyu opened it, her face was full of surprise.
The gift Shen Yi presented was "The Lofty Mount Lu" by the Ming Dynasty painter Shen Zhou. He knew that Song Meiyu liked landscape paintings, so he specially chose this gift.
Just as Shen Yi had predicted, Song Meiyu became completely absorbed in the painting after opening it, and it took her a while to come back to her senses.
"That's so thoughtful of you. This painting must have been expensive, right?" Song Meiyu said with a smile.
"I'm glad the teacher likes it," Shen Yi said.
Song Meiyu certainly liked it. She not only liked the painting, but also liked Shen Yi, her student.
She never blamed Shen Yi; in fact, she was hoping he would have more official duties so he could earn more credit, which would bring her, as his teacher, honor.
"Haha, of course the teacher likes it," Song Meiyu laughed.
"I was just joking with you. You did such a great job this time, and your teacher is so proud of you."
"It's all thanks to the teacher's excellent guidance," Shen Yi quickly replied.
Song Meiyu nodded in satisfaction, then put the painting aside and beckoned to Shen Yi, "Come and sit down, let me see how good your basic piano skills are now."
"Yes."
Upon hearing this, Shen Yi sat down next to Song Meiyu and began playing the piano under her guidance.
Shen Yi's piano playing is not bad, mainly because his predecessor studied it for a few years, but he hasn't played it for too long, so he still makes some mistakes.
So Song Meiyu then began to fulfill her duties as a teacher, instructing the students from the sidelines.
An hour later, the two chatted about everyday things on the sofa.
"Wen Yuan, I'm planning to host a party in a few days. I'll be inviting some celebrities and foreign dignitaries. Remember to come, and I'll introduce you to some of the people there," Song Meiyu said.
She often hosts these social gatherings to connect with everyone.
Now that she has such a satisfactory student as Shen Yi, of course she wants to take him out to broaden his horizons.
After saying that, she took out an invitation and handed it to Shen Yi.
Shen Yi hurriedly and solemnly accepted the invitation, saying, "Yes, I will definitely be there on time."
Song Meiyu nodded in satisfaction upon hearing this.
The two chatted for a while longer before Shen Yi took his leave.
. . . . . .
three days later.
The search for the Red Party has ceased, at least on the surface. Most of the secret agents and police officers have withdrawn, and Nanjing has returned to peace.
Because Shen Yi had just made a contribution, Dai Chunfeng did not mention the punishment of the action team.
Shen Yi has been spending most of his time in the archives room these past few days, investigating the Japanese mole in that department.
Although Ren Bingli didn't appear often in the Special Service Department and didn't have many acquaintances, it wasn't difficult for anyone in the department to get information about him, so everyone was a suspect.
Therefore, Dai Chunfeng granted Shen Yi the authority to access the department's personnel files, which can be considered a great deal of power.
This shows that the existence of this traitor was a thorn in Dai Chunfeng's side; he could not rest easy until he got rid of him.
Shen Yi was the same.
This also gave him the opportunity to get to know most of the personnel in the Secret Service.
However, there were simply too many people in the Special Service Department. Even after two days of observation, he only got a general idea and made notes on some individuals who seemed somewhat unusual.
At this moment, Shen Yi was carefully looking at the files in the archives room, while Liang Yu, the archives administrator opposite him, was watching him.
The archives are a place where confidentiality is of utmost importance. Although Dai Chunfeng granted Shen Yi the authority, someone must accompany him when he reviews the documents.
The archives also had a confidentiality supervisor position, which was concurrently held by Dai Chunfeng's secretary, Pan Qiwu.
However, Shen Yi was reviewing the files of the personnel in the open archives, and Pan Qiwu naturally couldn't stay in the archives room watching Shen Yi all the time, so this task fell to Liang Yu.
Liang Yu is only twenty-one years old this year. Other women her age have long been married and have children, but she has never even been in a relationship because of her work.
Shen Yi, also in his twenties and with a good appearance, has recently become quite the star in the Special Service Department, attracting the attention of some eligible female agents.
The Special Service Department does not currently prohibit marriage; however, this would have been unthinkable during the later period of the Military Intelligence Bureau.
Liang Yu also had some feelings for Shen Yi, and the two had been spending the past two days in the same room, so they had become quite familiar with each other.
Liang Yu discovered that Shen Yi was very knowledgeable and had a humorous way of speaking, which made her even more interested in him.
Seeing that Shen Yi seemed to be having some trouble reading, Liang Yu poured him a cup of tea: "Team Leader Shen, have some water and take a rest."
Shen Yi had already noticed Liang Yu's gaze. Although he was supposed to be supervising him, he didn't need to keep an eye on him all the time, so he was somewhat aware of Liang Yu's thoughts.
Thank you.
Shen Yi picked up the cup and took a sip.
Seeing this, Liang Yu smiled happily and continued, "Team Leader Shen, are you free after get off work? I heard there's a plum blossom cake place near the Qinhuai River that's really delicious. How about we go try it together?"
"Okay, I..."
"Ring ring ring~"
Before Shen Yi could finish speaking, the phone on the table rang.
Seeing this, Liang Yu glanced at the phone with some disdain, then picked up the receiver and answered it.
"Feed?"
"Ah? Okay, Team Leader Shen is right next to me, wait a moment."
Liang Yu handed the microphone to Shen Yi, "It seems to be for you."
Shen Yi frowned and took the microphone.
"I'm Shen Yi, what's wrong?"
"Okay, I understand. I'll be right there."
After hanging up the phone, Shen Yi looked at Liang Yu apologetically and said, "I'm sorry, I might have something to take care of, so I can't go with you."
Liang Yu felt a little sad upon hearing this, "Okay."
Seeing this, Shen Yi continued, "Next time, I'll take you to eat your way through the entire food street along the Qinhuai River."
Upon hearing this, Liang Yu immediately laughed, "Alright, you'd better keep your word."
"Of course it counts."
"Okay, then you go ahead and get busy. I'll organize these files," Liang Yu said with a smile.
"Okay, thank you for your help."
After saying that, Shen Yi packed up the personnel list he had just compiled and then walked out of the archives.
