Chapter 224: Begging at this point
Chapter 224: Begging at this point
"Dude... what is wrong with her?" Kyle asked the moment they stepped out of the room and put some distance between themselves and Maya.
"Man, that is such a rude question," Adam complained, sneaking a glance back into the room. Thankfully, Maya was sitting far enough away that even with her exceptional hearing, she shouldn’t be able to catch their conversation.
"I mean, first she was complimenting me like we’ve known each other for years, and now she’s asking me to oversee her training. Don’t you think that’s a little strange?" Kyle asked, genuine concern evident in his voice.
Adam let out a long sigh.
"Dude, she just respects athletes, especially people with great aim. When I sent her pictures of your trophies..."
"Wait. You entered my room?!" Kyle interrupted, his eyes widening as he fixed Adam with a warning glare.
"I...uh- Aunt let me in. Blame her if you can."
A brief flicker of smugness crossed Adam’s face, but it vanished almost instantly when he noticed the anger steadily building in Kyle’s eyes.
Quickly clasping his hands together in prayer, Adam gave him a pleading look.
"Please, dude. Help me out just this once. Please agree to train her."
Kyle frowned, thoroughly confused.
"Why are you so insistent, Adam?" It felt utterly bizarre to him that his cousin not only had no issue with all of this but seemed determined to make it happen.
Adam groaned and dropped his head into his hands.
"This is a school reunion, mate. You know how it is. Everyone had a crush, a first love, or someone they liked back in school. Reunions have a way of dragging all those old feelings back to the surface."
He shook his head firmly.
"And I absolutely do not want that."
Kyle rolled his eyes.
"Man, you’ve been watching the wrong kind of movies. Nothing like that happens in real life. Besides, you shouldn’t be trying to control her."
"I am not controlling her!" Adam shot back immediately, his voice filled with conviction. "She was the one who said she wanted to train with you. I’m just supporting her decision."
Kyle crossed his arms and stared at him with a blank expression.
Unfazed, Adam grabbed Kyle’s folded arm and pressed on.
"Just help me out this once. Please." His shoulders slumped as his confidence faltered. "And because of you, I might actually get to spend more time with her. This is the first time I’ve seen her in four months, and she’s leaving right after the contest."
Kyle let out an amused snort.
"You’ve only been dating her for four months, and you’re already this obsessed with her?"
"I mean..." Adam straightened up at once, his gloomy mood disappearing. "Have you looked at her? She’s gorgeous. Absolutely breathtaking. How is anyone supposed not to fall for her?"
"I’ve seen better. My own girlfriend, for one. Even Veronica..."
The words slipped out before Kyle could stop them.
He froze.
Adam’s eyes immediately lit up.
"Veronica?" he repeated, pouncing on the name. "Who’s that?"
He knew all about Amanda. There was no denying she was pretty. But this was the first time he had ever heard Kyle mention another girl.
Kyle shook his head.
"No one. Anyway, I already have plans with Amanda this evening, so I can’t make it."
Adam let out a dramatic groan.
"Dude... I’ve helped you out so many times. I even gave you my webcam back then."
Kyle leaned back and narrowed his eyes.
"Oh, we’re bringing up old favors now? Should I remind you how many times I’ve cleaned up your messes online? Or that time you got stranded outside a nightclub and called me in the middle of the night?"
"Ah, okay, okay!" Adam raised both hands in surrender. "Tell me what you want. I’ll do anything. Just don’t reject her. Please."
Kyle released another long sigh.
So desperate.
He had never seen Adam this obsessed with someone before. The guy was practically begging at this point.
To be fair, Adam had helped him out more than once. And during some of Kyle’s roughest days, Adam had made the effort to call and check on him.
Well, mostly to make fun of him.
But in his own strange way, that had been encouragement too.
After a moment of consideration, Kyle finally spoke.
"Fine. I’ll help."
"Yes!" Adam pumped a fist into the air, his face lighting up with excitement.
"But..."
The celebration died instantly.
Kyle held up a finger.
"Only on one condition."
His enthusiasm dimmed for a moment, though it didn’t disappear completely.
"What is it? Come on, tell me."
"You need to keep both your parents and mine from visiting me. No offense, but I really don’t feel like answering a hundred questions right now."
Kyle had nothing against his uncle and aunt. The problem was that if they showed up, his own parents would almost certainly follow.
And that was a conversation he would rather avoid altogether.
A grin spread across Adam’s face.
"That’s it? Consider it done."
Before Kyle could say anything else, Adam grabbed his arm.
"Now, if you would be so kind."
Kyle let out a resigned sigh and allowed himself to be dragged back toward the room.
The moment they stepped inside, his gaze instinctively fell on Maya.
She was standing beside the bed.
For the briefest instant, he caught her pulling her hand away from his pillow.
Kyle paused.
Maya immediately straightened, her expression perfectly calm, as though she had been doing absolutely nothing suspicious.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
The more he looked at her, the more suspicious she seemed.
But as always, Adam seemed oblivious to her weirdness and said, "He agreed! He will accompany us during the training."
Her lips, ever so slightly, curved as she nodded and said, "I am looking forward to it."
Kyle wryly smiled, "Ahaha, hope I can meet your expectations."
....
Once Adam and his little birdie finally left, Kyle dropped onto the bed and released a long sigh of relief.
Thankfully, Adam had work to take care of, which meant the visit had been cut short.
Kyle reminded him to keep his promises or he could kiss his time with his girlfriend goodbye.
Pulling out his phone, Kyle sent Amanda a message.
A few moments later, her reply arrived, apologizing for not making it yet. Apparently, the shop was packed, and the queue wasn’t moving anytime soon.
Kyle quickly told her that she didn’t need to buy noodles from that particular place.
The response he received was simple.
It’s okay, I’ve got it.
He stared at the message and shook his head with a faint smile.
That was Amanda for you.
At this point, he knew there was no convincing her otherwise. She wasn’t leaving that shop until she had a paper bag in her hand and the noodles safely inside it.
Setting his phone aside, Kyle glanced around the quiet room.
"Hmm... since I’ve got some time..."
[Live stream?]
The system’s suggestion appeared almost instantly, as if it had been waiting for the opportunity.
Kyle’s grin widened.
"Yeah, but let’s spice things up. How about we explore the new feature together, system?"
