Chapter 105 Clearing the Living Quarters
Chapter 105 Clearing the Living Quarters
Platinum stood on the aft deck, raised the rope gun in his hand, and pulled the trigger towards the top of the tanker deck.
"Pfft~ Whoosh."
The black anchor hook, carrying a 12mm thick cable, flew 40 meters into the air and successfully landed on the deck of the oil tanker.
Once the rope came to a stop, Platinum began to retrieve it until the anchor hook was caught on the tanker's railing, at which point Platinum secured the other end of the rope to the deck.
During this time, Lorraine distributed safety belts to all the workers.
With a click, Lorraine secured the climbing device to the rope, then gave it a firm tug to confirm that the connection between the climbing device and the rope was stable.
Then, Lorraine bent down, picked up a 20-millimeter-thick high-strength steel cable from the ground, and fixed the end with the anchor hook to her waist.
After completing the preparations, Lorraine gave Platinum a thumbs-up, then activated the rope climber and left the deck.
"Buzzing"
The lift steadily but slowly pulled Lorraine up.
Ten minutes later, Lorraine arrived on the deck of the tanker.
Lorraine then found a suitable location nearby and secured the steel cable there.
"The steel cable has been secured; we are now beginning the recovery process."
After receiving Lorraine's message, the winch temporarily installed on the deck slowly turned, adjusting the steel cable to a suitable angle.
After the steel cable was adjusted into place, Bai Jin picked up a specially made rope climber and fixed it to the steel cable. Then he fixed the two safety ropes on the rope climber to the hook in front of his chest.
Once it was in place, Bai Jin grabbed the rope climber with one hand and pressed the start switch, while in the other hand he held the shield he had borrowed from Ouyang Nian.
Five minutes later, Platinum also arrived on the tanker deck.
After removing the rope climbing device, Platinum, with a shield in one hand and a pistol in the other, walked ahead to the driver's cab where zombies had already been discovered.
Based on images transmitted back by the reconnaissance drone, Platinum, Lorraine, and Listener went up the outer gangway and entered the cockpit from the left.
"Pfft pfft pfft"
The silenced pistol fired four shots in quick succession, eliminating the four zombies in the driver's cab.
"Cockpit safety."
The two men and one dog then entered the cockpit to inspect the hatch leading to the lower level.
"The hatch is secured, and no zombies have been found in the corridor."
After confirming that the surrounding area was safe, Lorraine and Platinum put the pistol back in its holster, and then Lorraine inserted something that looked like a large USB flash drive into the cockpit.
"Activate backup power."
"Click".
Bai Jin pulled down the switch marked with the backup power supply on the wall of the cab.
The screens on the dashboard lit up one by one, starting a self-check procedure, and a message also popped up on Lorraine's multi-functional goggles.
[Taking control of the ship...]
Cleveland officially took over the tanker once the self-check progress on the screen reached 100%.
[Self-test complete. Backup power remaining at 37%. Equipment in the oil storage area is in good condition. Engine room alarm detected. Maintenance required.]
Looking at the flashing red dot on the screen, Lorraine sighed.
"Bringing these skilled workers along was the right choice."
"Cleveland, retrieve crew information and ship layout."
Crew information and ship layout have been retrieved and sent to the portable terminal.
After receiving the information, Lorraine and Platinum began checking their weapons and equipment. Once the check was complete, Lorraine turned off the backup power.
"There are 24 people on board: 12 in the engine department, 10 in the deck department, and two cooks. When the zombie outbreak occurred, 50% of the people were on standby at their respective posts."
"Then let's clear out all the zombies in the cabin first."
After confirming the action plan, Lorraine removed the multi-functional goggles and detached the night vision goggles from the helmet, while Platinum activated the night vision mode.
"Listen carefully, go."
After opening the hatch, Di Ting went directly to the end of the corridor to check if there were any zombies there.
"The corridor is safe."
After receiving the message from Di Ting, Lorraine and Platinum began to clear the zombies from the 10 cabins.
Lorraine would make some noise at the door of each cabin to attract any zombies that might be inside.
After some effort, Lorraine confirmed the presence of zombies in the cabin.
Then, Lorraine raised his shotgun, aimed at the wooden door of the cabin, and pulled the trigger.
"Bang"
Although the wooden door of the cabin was not blasted through by the single shot, the central part was already badly damaged.
Lorraine swung his shotgun, smashing open the dilapidated part of the wooden door with the butt, and then sent the zombies inside the cabin into the cycle of reincarnation.
Lorraine followed the same method and successfully cleared out all the zombies on this floor after using up 18 shotgun shells.
As Lorraine loaded ammunition into her shotgun, Diting sounded an alarm, having spotted two zombies moving around at the bottom of the stairs.
Platinum walked to the top of the stairs and, from his vantage point, fired two shots, successfully ending the lives of two zombies.
After loading the ammunition, Lorraine went to Platinum's side and listened intently to the sounds coming from downstairs.
"It's safe downstairs for now. Listen carefully, go."
The next floor is still the living area, with 10 separate cabins.
Lorraine repeated the same method, eliminating the two zombies hiding in the cabin on this floor.
This time, however, the gunshots did not attract the zombies downstairs.
As always, Di Ting went downstairs first to scout the way. After confirming that it was safe, Lorraine and Platinum arrived downstairs and saw that the layout of this floor was different from that of the upper floor.
This floor has only four individual cabins, while the other side is a large leisure area.
Lorraine banged on the doors of the four cabins but found no zombies inside.
Lorraine and the others went down again, and this floor became two cabins and a restaurant.
"Let's clear out the zombies in the restaurant first."
Lorraine nodded and made way for him.
Platinum took two quick steps and kicked open the restaurant door.
Platinum then quickly entered the restaurant, but did not see any zombies at first. A few seconds later, a swaying figure emerged from the kitchen.
"puff"
After killing the zombie, Platinum moved to a different position, allowing her to see inside the kitchen.
A minute later, there was still no sound coming from the kitchen.
"Restaurant safety, preparing to inspect the kitchen."
Because of the cramped kitchen, Platinum decided to let Di Ting go inside for a look around.
"Kitchen safety."
Upon learning the news, Lorraine began banging on the door.
After locating the cabin where the zombies were, Lorraine raised her shotgun.
"Bang—bang bang"
Three gunshots rang out, and Lorraine eliminated the last remaining zombie on this floor.
"Safety."
The two met up in the restaurant to determine the number of zombies remaining.
"There should only be 8 zombies left in the engine room."
After saying that, Lorraine turned off the night vision goggles, opened his portable terminal, and checked the layout of the engine room.
A few minutes later, Lorraine let out a long sigh.
"It seems inconvenient to use guns in this engine room; it's full of machines."
