Chapter 399: The Subjugation of Gorgon!
Chapter 399: The Subjugation of Gorgon!
Chapter 51: The Subjugation of Gorgon!
Under the scorching sun, the massive snake goddess lay prostrate on the ground.
A small figure continued her steady walk toward her. In all the world, no one had more right to end Gorgon’s life than her.
It was only natural for the side of reason to put an end to the side of madness.
"Ana, have you made your choice—?"
Merlin held this little girl in high regard. Seeing her reach the end of her journey now, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret.
"You—!"
From Gorgon’s perspective, she didn’t see a young goddess. Instead, she saw a figure glowing with an ominous crimson light, eyes burning a deep, blood-red.
"Can you no longer even see the form of ’yourself’? You truly have fallen into being nothing but a monster," Ana said slowly, looking up at the titan before her.
"What are you? What kind of monster are you?!"
"As I thought, you still can’t see me. If you were willing to look at me, perhaps there would still be a chance to fix this."
Gorgon was on the verge of total insanity. It was as if her natural predator had arrived, and her survival instincts were screaming in agony.
To Ana, it was a pitiful sight. Because of the cruelty of humans, she had become a monster. And now, she was closer to that true monster form than ever before.
"From the beginning, I have always warned myself... that I must not live. I must not stay here. I must not smile. Now, it is time for everything to return to tranquility."
Ana looked up, her eyes meeting Gorgon’s with unwavering resolve. She was ready.
"Die! Die!! DIE!!!"
In that moment, Gorgon tore herself free from the shackles of the ’Commandment of Love.’
There was no longer any room for spite in her heart. All that remained was raw fury and terror—the desperate instinct of a creature facing death.
"Let it all turn to dust..."
"Voom—!"
A beam of black-red petrification energy erupted from Gorgon’s Mystic Eyes.
"Your Mystic Eyes... will be nullified by mine."
"Boom—!"
Ana tore off her headband, activating her own Mystic Eyes at the same time.
Since they shared the same source, the identical petrification beams collided mid-air with a violent surge.
The ground began to turn to stone bit by bit. Mash watched the scene, her heart racing as she weighed whether or not she should intervene.
"Boom—!"
Their gazes locked. In that split second, Gorgon ’saw’ the true form of her opponent.
"Don’t... don’t look at me with those eyes!"
A roar that sounded more like a shriek tore through the air. The giant purple snakes that made up Gorgon’s hair began to fire beams in every direction, a blind and frantic bombardment.
"Damn... I’m running low on Mana..."
Blasted back by a stray laser, Ana’s face went pale.
Even though she had a contract with Merlin, her Mana output had always been an issue. Previously, she had been sustaining herself by hunting magical beasts.
"Behave yourself!"
"Clang—!"
Mash moved. This kind of indiscriminate fire was the most troublesome because of the widespread collateral damage.
She leaped high into the air, slamming her shield directly onto the top of Gorgon’s head.
The ’Shield Bash’ was incredibly effective. Gorgon was instantly dazed, her head swimming as her chaotic barrage sputtered out.
"Take my Mana, Ana!"
From the sidelines, Merlin channeled his energy through their contract, flooding Ana with power.
Instantly, Ana’s aura flared to life.
"Gorgon..."
"Don’t call me that name! I am Tiamat! The Goddess of the Primordial!"
"No. You are the woman-monster of the Shapeless Isle. The Slayer of Heroes. That is your true self, Gorgon. Your revenge will never truly leave that island."
"No... that’s not... that’s not it..."
"Hum—!"
In her dazed state, sealed memories began to resurface. Images Gorgon had spent a lifetime trying to forget flooded her mind.
The persecuted goddess... Medusa, turning into a monster... accompanied by her two sisters to an island where no one would ever visit. The three sisters lived there together.
But more and more humans arrived, claiming they were there to ’slay the monster’ for glory.
One, two, three, ten... the number of ’heroes’ seeking to make a name for themselves grew. And the mountain of human corpses grew along with them.
This was Gorgon’s Karma. In the end, the victimized goddess became the very monster they feared.
In her madness, Gorgon had devoured her two older sisters—the only ones who had ever truly loved and cared for her.
From that moment, the monster Gorgon was born, carrying an infinite hatred for all of humanity.
"Swoosh—!"
As Gorgon lost her grip on consciousness, Ana leaped high. She drove the scythe Harpe deep into Gorgon’s body.
Immediately, white cracks began to spiderweb across Gorgon’s massive frame. She was starting to crumble.
"Goodbye, my other self. Our sorrow... even if we cannot discard it, it is something that can never be fulfilled."
"That scythe of yours..."
"Vanish with me, Gorgon. This is the reason I was called to this land."
"Boom—!"
The giant snake goddess’s body shattered, finally vanishing in a blinding explosion.
And disappearing along with her was the young girl who had bravely sacrificed her life.
Standing in the distance, Mash managed a small smile. One pillar of the Three Goddess Alliance, the Goddess of Magical Beasts, had been defeated.
Merlin and Fujimaru Ritsuka, who had been watching the battle unfold, shared her relief. Seeing such a powerful goddess fall filled them with shock, but also a profound sense of hope.
Finally, one of the three threats was gone.
However, after the initial joy faded, Fujimaru Ritsuka found he couldn’t keep smiling.
Mash’s appearance had changed drastically, as if she had become a different person. Furthermore, Akira had once mentioned that one goddess was "his woman," one was "impossible to communicate with," and there was no news of the third.
This defeated goddess was likely the "uncommunicative" one. That meant the remaining two would be an even bigger problem.
Akira had been very explicit about his intentions toward the goddesses. If Ritsuka and the others took them down, would they be able to withstand Akira’s wrath?
After thinking it over, Ritsuka’s answer was a resounding "no."
And at that very moment, as Gorgon fell, deep within the furthest reaches of the ocean, a terrifying Mana began to boil.
The sea that birthed all life—the Mother of all living things—had begun to wake.
